Using Outlook Off-Campus
If you live or travel to an off-campus location that is not located on the CNU System, you'll discover sending mail through Outlook only partially works. You may find you can receive mail from CNU without issue, but receive a relay error when trying to send mail.

Call your internet provider's tech support and ask for the Outgoing/SMTP mail server name*. You may also try visiting your internet provider's website and locating the section on e-mail setup for the Outgoing/SMTP mail server name*. Once you get the information write it down you will want it handy.

We will be using AOL as an example of an ISP (Internet Service Provider) for this scenario.
  1. Open Outlook so that it is displaying the Inbox or Outlook Today view.
  2. At the top of the Outlook window select Tools > E-mail Accounts.
  3. Select View or Change account Existing E-mail Account information > Next.
  4. Select mail.cnu.edu > Change.
  5. Under server information change the Outgoing Mail Server/(SMTP) to the name of the server you have written down. Since for this example we are using AOL, the server name is smtp.aol.com* > Next > Finish.
  6. You should now be back at the Inbox or Outlook Today view. Hit Send/Receive.
  7. You will now be able to send and reply to emails while off campus.
  8. When you are back on campus you will need to follow steps 1-6, changing the Outgoing/SMTP server name back to mail.cnu.edu.

*The Outgoing/SMTP server name will be different depending on your ISP.
